Andrew McKeown - Born in Middlesbrough, this sculptor is known for his high quality public sculptures around the UK and in Middlesbrough at Albert Park, Ayresome Gardens, Linthorpe Cemetery, Easterside Park, Pallister Park Primary School, St. Edwards Primary School and many more locations. He is based on the fantastic Platform Arts Studios in town.

Fred Appleyard - A landscape artist with 41 works exhibited during his lifetime by the Royal Academy. Appleyard was born in Middlesbrough in 1874, the son of an iron-merchant.

Graham Smith - Middlesbrough-born photographer whose photographs are in the permanent collections of the Museum of Modern Art (New York), and the Victoria and Albert Museum (London). Since 1990 he has been a professional woodworker and has also written; his writing has appeared in Granta.

Len Tabner - Born in South Bank, his work records regional themes. His favored medium is watercolour laced with pastel. His work has included elemental forces of Nature, Potash mines and ironworks on Teesside.

Mackenzie Thorpe - Internationally renowned artist Mackenzie Thorpe was born in Middlesbrough. He studied at the local Cleveland College of Art and Design (CCAD) and retains rich links to our town.

His work was featured in a special solo exhibition One Man's Journey: Mackenzie Thorpe on Cook, Middlesbrough and Australia at the Captain Cook Birthplace Museum from 17 April 2010 - 2 January 2011. The unique work commemorates the 240 years since local-born Captain James Cook landed in Australia and includes work on the Middlesbrough of his childhood.

Keep an eye out for a new Mackenzie Thorpe exhibition at Teesside University's Middlesbrough Tower 3 - 29 October 2011. With a working title of Middlesbrough Murals, we're excited that Mackenzie Thorpe is creating eight new and unique pieces for the special event.

Mackenzie Thorpe exhibition at Teesside University is on 3-29 October 2011 at the Constantine Gallery in Middlesbrough Tower. Open Monday-Friday 9AM-5PM through October 2011.

Meet the Artist

Mackenzie will be on hand to meet members of the public on Saturday 8 October, from 11.00am - 4.00pm. It's a chance to talk to the artist himself and ask him directly about his work and his influences.

Richard Piers Rayner - Born in Middlesbrough, graphic artist Richard Piers Rayner has found international success as his art for the book "The Road to Perdition" was turned into a Hollywood blockbuster by Sam Mendes starring Tom Hanks and Paul Newman. Also fitting for a third generation fan, he is the artist in residence at Middlesbrough Football Club.

Robert Nixon - Born in Middlesbrough, this cartoonist is best known for his work in Dandy, Beano, Whoopee, Monster Fun, and Shiver & Shake comics, 'ghosting' many popular comic characters such as 'Lord Snooty' , 'Roger the Dodger', 'Korky the Cat', 'Frankie Stein', and bringing to life his own creations, including 'Kid Kong', 'Gums', 'King Arthur and his Frights of the Round Table' and 'Ivy the Terrible.'

Simon McKeown - Born in Middlesbrough, Simon McKeown is a Fine Artist. His most recently exhibited work – Motion Disabled – has been shown internationally including the USA at the Smithsonian International Gallery. Simon’s work reflects his interest, knowledge and experience of Disability and in particular our view of ‘normality’ and ‘difference’.He was named DaDaFest International Artist of Year 2010-2011.
