Angela Readman - Poet, born in Middlesbrough in 1973. She has published two full length collections of poetry and several shorter collections.
Andy Willoughby - Poet and playwright from Eston, who was Middlesbrough's poet laureate 2003-4. Along with Bob Beagrie he also runs independent small press Ek Zuban, which publishes bilingual pamphlets and writing and arts magazine, Kenaz.

Bob Beagrie - Award-winning freelance writer, born in Middlesbrough. His latest publication is Perkele, a collaborative bilingual pamphlet in English and Finnish, written with Kalle Niinikangas. Ernest William Hornung - Born in Middlesbrough and known as Willie, he is most famous for writing the Raffles series of novels about a gentleman thief in late Victorian London.

Paul C. Doherty - Born in Middlesbrough, included in the Times 100 Masters of Crime list, he has published a series of historical mysteries set in the Middle Ages, Classical, Greek, Ancient Egypt and elsewhere. He writes under his own name, both as P.C. Doherty and Paul C. Doherty, as well as the pennames: Anna Apostolou, Michael Clynes, Ann Dukthas, C. L. Grace, Paul Harding, and Vanessa Alexander.
Richard Milward - Richard Milward was born in Middlesbrough in 1984. His debut novel, Apples, was published in 2007, to great acclaim and his new novel, Ten Storey Love Song, is a stunning piece of prose set in a ten-storey block of flats in the North-East.
Sometimes known as the 'Bard of the Boro,' he officially launched Middlesbrough's first Literary Festival in 2009.
