transporter bridge tours available during discover middlesbrough

Teesside's most iconic landmark will open up for night time tours as part of this year’s Discover Middlesbrough Festival this Friday (October 27, 6pm-10pm).

The tours, sponsored by SABIC, will take visitors to the top of the Bridge’s 160ft high walkway via the recently installed glass lift to provide a unique experience of Teesside at night.

As well as trips to the top of the Bridge, visitors will also be able to watch archival footage and learn more about Teesside’s industrial history and bridge building heritage in the newly renovated Visitor Centre, and explore the mechanisms of the Bridge in the Winding House Viewing Area. Exclusive Transporter Bridge merchandise will also be on sale (cash only).

Opened in October 1911 by Prince Arthur of Connaught, the Tees Transporter Bridge has served the people of Teesside for over 100 years and has featured on the big and small screen including on Billy Elliott and Auf Wiedersehen, Pet. To mark the Bridge’s centenary an extensive renovation of the structure and enhancement to Visitor facilities was undertaken with support from the Heritage Lottery Fund.

Tosh Warwick, Heritage Development Officer said: “The Teesside by Night Transporter Tours provide a unique opportunity for the community to experience the heritage, culture and environment of the Bridge and the Tees Valley in a unique way.”

Councillor Mick Thompson, Middlesbrough Council’s Executive Member for Culture and Communities, said: “Discover Middlesbrough has become a popular fixture on the town’s calendar, and it is fantastic that the community will be able to enjoy the ascending the Transporter Bridge by moonlight as part of this special event.”

Under 18s must be accompanied by an adult. Bookings can be made by contacting the Box Office on 01642 815181.
