At the end of World War One Lloyd George promised a land ‘Fit for Heroes’. The first modern estates built in Middlesbrough in the early 1920s, Acklam Garden City and the Whinney Banks were part of this promise; houses built with all modern conveniences, spacious gardens, laid out with green spaces and allotments close by.
Join local historian Mike McCann (born on the Whinney Banks) for a walk around the estates recalling their history. Refreshments and a chat afterwards in Acklam Green Centre.
